Implementation of the New Network Rail Signage Standards

In June 2021, Network Rail released the “Wayfinding Design Guidance” manual NR/GN/CIV/300/01, which provides comprehensive instructions for designing and implementing effective wayfinding systems in stations. This guidance emphasises creating user-friendly environments with clear, consistent signage to improve passenger navigation.

Transport Signs has been working with Train Operators and Main Contractors to implement these new graphical standards across the UK rail network. From Grimsby Town to London Euston, our team of Designers and Project Managers have been surveying, artworking, fabricating, and installing these new graphical signage standards.

How we delivered:

An updated typeface, Rail Alphabet 2, has been introduced to replace the NR Brunel typeface. Designed by Margaret Calvert and Henrik Kubel, Rail Alphabet 2 offers improved legibility and includes new pictograms for modern facilities. These include gender-neutral toilets and vaping areas. This typeface aims to standardise signage across the network, enhancing consistency and readability.

The team at Transport Signs works with the most recent revision of the standard, released in December 2024, to complete railway station surveys and assemble the design of Wayfinding and Signage Schedules on behalf of our clients.

Design Phase:

Our design team completes the wayfinding within the station environment before each sign face is artworked and assembled into a signage schedule for stakeholder reviews.

We also work with the Network Rail signage standards NR/GN/CIV/300/05 Rail Symbol 2 and NR/GN/CIV/300/04 Inclusive Design.

Fabrication

Following the approval of the signage scheme, our delivery teams take over and coordinate the fabrication and installation of the station signage.

Installation

The result is a fully installed signage system compliant with the new Network Rail Graphical Standards.
