Why is railway trackside and lineside operational safety signage important?
This type of signage is crucial for ensuring the safety and efficiency of train operations. Trackside and Lineside signage provides essential information for train operators, maintenance crews and other personnel working around the tracks. They communicate important details such as speed limits, upcoming hazards, track conditions and signals.

On the left, a chainage sign which identifies the current location on the rail network. On the right, a sign indicating a gradient ahead.
Ensuring correct placement
Properly placed and well-maintained signage helps prevent accidents, reduces the risk of collisions and ensures that trains can navigate the tracks smoothly.
Additionally, trackside signage also aids in emergency response coordination and supports effective communication between different teams involved in railway operations.

How Transport Signs can help
Here’s how Transport Signs can assist you in designing, fabricating and installing your signage.
- Site survey – Our teams will come out and complete a site survey with you. Photos will be taken and a scope for the project assembled.
- Signage schedule – On completion of the survey, all information will be factored into a schedule showing positioning and the proposed sign for a specific location.
- Design – Our engineers can design structures and foundations in line with Eurocodes and Network Rail Standards for client approval and sign-off prior to fabrication and installation.
- Project management – We will assist and drive the project forward, engaging stakeholders to help progress the approvals process. Our Project Management team will prepare Risk Assessments and Method Statements to cover the full site installation.
- Fabrication – Once the scope is approved, all signage will be fabricated in line with ‘GIRT 7033 Lineside Operational Safety Sign’ Standards and all structures built to the engineers’ specifications.
- Installation – All of our installation teams have Personal Trackside Safety (PTS) training to allow us to carry out the installation lineside.
